Energy

Vermont plans to make 90% of their energy sources from renewables by 2050 through use of efficiency, electric vehicles and renewable power generation (mostly hydro).

Biogas is a renewable energy source that is popping all over India! This one is is Kerala.

Wow. This is crazy. Obama is implementing renewable energy projects on public lands sparking a large controversy between two values of the Environmental movement. We want our pristine, public lands and national parks unspoiled but also we want renewable energy... What to do?!

Tata Power is installing a 28.8 MW solar installation in Maharashtra

US energy use decreased in 2012 due to an increase in renewable energy! AND energy anaylsis and increased efficiency standards. Check this graph.

Finally, my two favorite things have combined. Whiskey and renewable energy. I think I just peed a little bit with excitement.

A little news from my good ol' home state, Oregon! Energy Trust managed to significantly increase energy efficiency to its 1.5 million utility customers mostly by the use of efficiency energy audits. Imagine if there was a larger presence of renewable energy!

What's better than renewable energy? Community owned renewable energy! The goal for every community should be locally owned power, locally owned food, locally owned businesses and thus create a more vibrant and more resilient local economy.

How do you say Solar Project in Punjabi? I don't know either but it's a good time to learn.

Like with all other things, sustainability can molded and manipulated to provide a hideous result. I am all for getting away from our dependence on oil but the news that the Pentagon is investing more in biofuels is bad news for food prices in developing countries. Rising food prices cause unrest, revolt and harder times for people who already have it bad.

What's that saying? The road to hell is paved with good intentions...

Good news, folks! Renewable energy has made such leaps and bounds this last year that centralized power utilities are starting to wake and see that its a sunny day for solar which is not good for them.

The battle begins...

The Sebastopol city council has required that all new houses must have solar panels on their roofs. This is a great example of a locality taking action to make their community more sustainable.

I wonder if all the 'liberal' places in the states start this... what will happen? Will the solar use of the country resemble the political red/blue state map that is dominating our presidential elections? I would hate to see sustainability so politicized.

These ranchers are fighting against coal being moved to Asian markets.

The last thing we need in order to mitigate climate change is more coal in the air. This is insane.

Mark Jacobson is saving the world by research. He first made waves when he and his colleague, Mark Delucchi published a paper to show how the world could transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030. Not only that, they calculated how many solar plants, wind turbines, hydro-electric plants and other clean energy sources it would take. Now, they just released the same type of paper for New York State. Its fascinating please read. He plans to do fifty plans for fifty states.

"The main obstacles are political and social..."

Check it out! New developments in wind technology.

One of the biggest problems with windmills is that they generally have a lot of moving parts and so they require a lot of maintenance. This article reveals that the EWICON prototype has done away with the moving parts required to produce electricity. The design looks slick, and best of all, it sticks it to anyone who says they don't windmills around because they are such an eyesore.

Here's another article about a different prototype but using the same principles. Enjoy!

Now for some good news in renewable energy! Whew!
This is a phenomenal story that almost made me jump out of my chair when I read it. As one reads news about how Koch Brothers and ALEC are defunding renewable projects across the states or how one ponders about the lack of progress on any real climate action, it's nice to see this article.

Enjoy those positive statistics but let's remind ourselves that we've got to keep it up!

Here's the newest attempt by the Koch brothers and other extractive industries that are trying to weaken the progress made by some states to encourage renewable energy. I feel like progress in the States could analogized by the swing of a pendulum. There's quite a bit of push and pull/back and forth but eventually there is some good things that come out of it. That's my hope anyway. Regardless, people back home should be aware of these bills coming up and expose the truth.

And now for some bad news...

The State Department downplays the devastating impact the Keystone Pipeline will have on climate change and carbon emissions. I still have hope that Obama will make the right decision to reject the pipeline but it wouldn't be the first time I was disappointed by him. Money talks and the people who are pushing this pipeline have plenty of it. News stories like this leave me so frustrated and speechless. When can men do against such unlimited money and corporate power?

Our only hope is to organize and please donate and support the 350.org movement as much as you possibly can!

In the study of Renewable Energy, it is ideal to create energy from the most abundant resources around you. I can't think of a more abundant, renewable resource than urine. Below is a link about four African girls who made a generator that runs off of urine. 1 liter of urine powers the generator for 6 hours. To test it they just have a 60 watt bulb that lights up.

I'm sure the set up is not perfect as there are probably plenty of kinks to work out but here's the thing that I get most excited about: renewable energy does not have to be an expensive technological fix. It can be cheap and anyone can come up with a great idea.
